Philippine Rise

Goal: Catalyze the creation of an approximately 150,000 km2 large-scale ocean conservation area and measurably improve the management of approximately 10,000 km2 of existing protections

Alliance Partnerships

The Alliance is partnering with the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), Fishery Management Area 1 Management Board (FMA1 MB), and Zoological Society of London (ZSL) to establish the Philippine Rise Ocean Conservation Area, increase management capacity, support monitoring and surveillance capabilities, and identify sustainable financing options in support of a new large scale ocean conservation area in the Philippines.

The Philippine Rise comprises one of the only known spawning areas for Pacific bluefin tuna.

Located at the origin of the Kurushio Current, this Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area plays an important role in global nutrient and larvae transport. Expeditions to the area have documented levels of biodiversity and productivity unmatched throughout the rest of the Philippines.

The proposed area for protection includes the largest inactive underwater volcanic caldera in the world and likely hosts many yet undiscovered marine species. The Philippine Rise also has significant economic and strategic importance as the rich marine environment supports the livelihoods of local fishing communities.

Establishing the first offshore large-scale ocean conservation area in the Philippines

The Philippines announced its support to the global commitment to protect 30% of its lands and waters by 2030, becoming the first Asian country to officially support this global goal. Successful designation of the Philippine Rise Ocean Conservation Area will help to motivate more rapid development of large-scale ocean conservation areas within the Philippines and hold potential to inspire other Asian countries to follow suit.
