Since 2023, the Blue Nature Alliance has convened over 30 leading capacity development practitioners and marine conservation leaders to address the urgent capacity gap required to implement the marine 30×30 target equitably and effectively.
Through multiple cycles of listening, reflection, analysis, action identification, and adaptation, marine conservation practitioners utilized the practices and tools of systems thinking. An initial group was convened to generate the building blocks for a comprehensive system map. This system map provides a visual framework for understanding key relationships, structures, and patterns that influence outcomes, bringing together stakeholder perspectives on how the marine conservation system operates and can change over time. Ultimately, this rigorous systems analysis informed the development of a global strategy designed to target the structural drivers limiting marine conservation effectiveness.
